Valentino, Before and After

I enjoyed the company of Valentino designers Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli before and after their tour de force of a Fall 2011 show. It’s such a privilege to visit the atelier in Paris and see all the artisans creating such exquisite beauty. I can’t wait to host Maria Grazia and Pier Paolo in Dallas next month for Crystal Charity.

Model Citizen: Jacquelyn Jablonski

Jacquelyn Jablonski in Balenciaga by Nicolas Ghesquiére, Fall 2010.

Jacquelyn Jablonski’s life is as versatile as her look.  Fresh off a Paris couture stint – which included turns on the runways of Chanel, Valentino, Dior and Giambattista Valli – the 19-year-old current face of Hermès is home, in New Jersey, cooking shrimp and grilled pineapple for her family. That sounds about right for the face of all-American brand Tommy Hilfiger, which she also is. Since signing with Supreme Management in 2010 she has appeared in a slew of editorials, working with photographers such as Patrick Demarchelier, Mario Testino and Juergen Teller.  The model with the sporty good looks talked with us about life along the Jersey Shore.

Behind The Book: Piano on a Beach

In their determination to get an authentic shot for the latest issue of The Book, our creative team literally placed a piano on the sands of remote Bandon Beach in Oregon. To get to Bandon, the team led by senior art director Lori Stadig flew to Eugene and drove for 3 hours. “It just had to be that beach, because of the unusual rock formations,” says Stadig. “And it’s just so beautiful there.” The run-down piano, purchased in Portland, was already “on its last legs” so a prop stylist removed its innards, to lighten the load. It had to be transported in the bed of a pickup truck because the beach wouldn’t allow a moving truck. On site, the crew waited for the light to be just right (not too sunny.) Afterward, the piano was donated to a Portland performance artist. See the final image after the jump.

My Summer Vacation: Roopal Patel

My morning view.

When I’m not traveling for work, I love to spend long weekends at my family’s home in the Hamptons.  We’ve been going since I was 10 years old. I love it because it is extremely laid back. I enjoy taking long naps, going on bike rides, reading books and cooking seafood with my family. On Saturdays we take a trip to the Farmer’s Market and check out the homemade ice cream shops.

The Venice Biennale is the oldest, and remains the grand dame, of the international expositions for contemporary art. This year it encompasses 89 national pavilions, 37 official collateral shows and other parallel events, on view through November 27. It is spread across the Giardini, the Arsenale, the six administrative units of the city and the nearby islands. Contemporary works play against the legacy of Venetian masters, adding to the visual tapestry of it all.

At the Prada Foundation, Francesco Vezzoli placed a bust of himself trying to kiss a 17th century bust of Apollo.

For fashion lovers a new season means  far more than the changing of leaves and temperature. Each season—whether pre-fall, fall, spring or resort—calls for a weather-appropriate wardrobe shift complete with the dreaded chore of rotating, reorganizing and prioritizing. If you have the space to swap and shop, then it’s out with the sweaters and in with the sundresses. But for those tight on space and time, a change in season likely results in a cramped and cluttered closet. Garde Robe offers the ultimate solution for high-fashion collectors low on storage.

Where to Eat in Capri

If you’re ever in Naples, say, visiting the Kiton factory, a day trip to Capri is a must. Kiton CEO Antonio De Matteis, who makes a second home on the island, steered us to Torre Saracena for a spectacular view and seafood that couldn’t have been any fresher.

The northern side of Capri faces the mainland. The ferries deposit everyone at Marina Grande.

Where to Eat in Naples

Maybe you’ve heard stories implying Naples isn’t the most tourist-friendly city. But to visit Naples as a guest of Kiton, guided by CEO Antonio de Matteis, is to experience hospitality in the extreme. The first thing you’ll appreciate is how beautifully situated the city is, on the azure Gulf of Naples (where the cherished red coral blooms,) near the base of Mt.Vesuvio. The city bears the weight of millennia, buoyed by everyday bustle and density. And the food! Famous as the birthplace of pizza, Naples boasts outstanding seafood. The mozzarella alone is worth the journey.

For a light, picturesque lunch with seaside ambience we headed to La Scialuppa (the lifeboat) on the marina of Castel dell’Ovo, a castle attached to the coast by a causeway crowded with newlyweds.
